Our Backyard – Anglesea

Have we stepped back into the 1950’s or have we been secretly hiding under a false blanket of liberation & equality?

It just seems that the news recently has highlighted that women’s rights and gender equality is still an issue that must be addressed, not just in Australia but in the world. How can it be fair that 2 people doing the same job are paid differently because one is male and one is female? After 10 years of asking to get paid the same as her co-worker, Lisa Wilkinson finally had enough and went to a television network where she is being promised to be rewarded financially for her worth. The Hollywood case of men in positions of power mistreating woman and taking advantage of them in the workplace.

I seriously can’t believe this country has to vote on whether two people of the same sex have the right to get married. It’s a disgrace that people who love each are judged by others and unable to have the rights of heterosexual couples. I am a big YES for allowing anyone that loves each other to demonstrate that, how they wish and if that’s means getting married and buying property together then go for it.

So what does all this have to do with real estate you may ask! Well, in our industry and roles, I get treated differently too, I’m actually thrilled and proud to work in an office full of strong independent women, it’s quite unique. For us it can be a weekly struggle that for some reason we have learned to cope with or expect, it doesn’t make it right though. Regularly I get correspondence sent to me, funnily enough 90% of it is from solicitors and this is how it goes:

Attention: The Manager

Dear Sir

One particular law firm, I have advised 4 times to alter their ‘template’ to allow for the circumstances of the manager being a woman! To no avail, they just keep sending it. If it wasn’t for the fact that I really need those contracts, I’d probably send them back ‘not known at this address’ and attention to, The Manager…… Dear Madam.

Along with voting for equality, there is of course legal implications for anyone around purchasing property together and the laws that will need to be addressed as a result. It’s important to understand these or to be aware of the changes that need to be put into place once this country steps up to the year 2017.

To all the women and men that believe in equality, being fair, treating people with love and respect, thank you! You are the ones that will make a difference, it doesn’t have to be on a huge world scale topic, It can be as simple as addressing a letter correctly.

Have a great weekend, look forward to seeing you at the opens & private appointments.

Regards
