Our Backyard – Anglesea

Welcome to Anglesea

Many signs have popped up on front fences, nature strips and around town calling for the closure of the Anglesea power station.

Environmentalists say the State Government should shut down Alcoa’s Anglesea coal fired power station when the company closes its Point Henry aluminium plant.

The Anglesea business was put on the market in February.

While the government says it is keen to help the company sell the facility and protect the 80 jobs it creates, objectors say it threatens the health of local residents and the environment.

Jacinta Morahan of Surfcoast Air Action said Victoria’s energy market was already in surplus, and the closure of Point Henry would further reduce demand.

“It begs the question: ‘for how long will employment and the employment of 80 people or less, trump the health of at least 2000 residents and up to 16,500 visitors during summer?”
