Our Backyard – Anglesea & Torquay

I have this incredibly special monthly catch up with a bunch of long-time friends, we started this tradition over 15 years ago and have been friends for close to 30 years, there are 14 of us in the group. Each woman gets nominated a month and it’s up to her to pick date, time & venue so there can literally be just 2 that can go or as many as 14. It makes me spend a night in Melbourne at great restaurants which I just love as not only do I see my favourite humans, it also gives me my city fix. We designed it as a way to make sure, husbands, kids partners & pets are left to fend for themselves whist we have some quality time or else you know how it goes, life just gets too busy and we really should never be too busy to allocate time to friendships.

Sometimes I drive back to the coast after dinner just because it’s an easy drive at 11pm at night! Last night there were two birthdays so I decided to stay and head back early this morning, I had the best night, it was lovely. As I approached the Westgate I saw a flashing sign ‘ happy 40th birthday Westgate bridge’ which was then follow up with ‘traffic hazard’ and all lanes were closed except one to clear an accident. When I was first contemplated moving to the coast, I so vividly recall asking my managing director whether he missed Melbourne, his response was he really enjoyed heading to Melbourne for dinners and outings but by far the best thing about it was seeing the Westgate in his rear vision mirror! I laughed this morning at that whilst I spent nearly an hour trying to get over it and it was like a light bulb moment. As I came down the great ocean road and saw that blue water of Point Roadknight, the relief was real and so was my smile. Back to bliss, peace and serenity. We are also experiencing road works at the moment from freshwater creek as they are installing side barriers but overall it’s not major and a small price to pay for temporarily being inconvenienced.

If you love ice cream and gelato, you must head to our newest store on the great ocean road, these incredible business owners run a successful shop in Lorne and now have the Anglesea one. All hand made with locally sourced produce. Today for example they were roasting apricots and making a puree as a special ingredient. How delicious! They have great plans to extend the range and grow the business, offering take away tubs too. Check out their story and website and of course head to the store and support local business. http://gelatogelato.com.au/
